Treatment: the sponge coral is dyed

Sponge coral, also known as sea sponge coral or bamboo coral, is an organic gemstone formed from the skeletal remains of marine coral polyps. It typically has a porous, sponge-like appearance and is often dyed to enhance its color. Sponge coral comes in various shades, including red, pink, orange, and black. It is commonly used in jewelry, particularly in beadwork and cabochon settings.

Fun fact: Sponge coral is not actually a true coral species but rather a type of coral known as gorgonian coral, which grows in tree-like colonies on the ocean floor. Despite its name, sponge coral is not soft like a sea sponge but has a hard calcium carbonate skeleton like other corals. In addition to its use in jewelry, sponge coral has also been utilized in traditional medicine and as a decorative material in art and sculpture throughout history.

MATERIALS

Barse Jewelry has made jewelry since 1986 and is based in Dallas, Texas. Barse states that every stone it uses is genuine. Its cast pieces are made by lost-wax casting in its own factory in Thailand, most of them in Barse's golden bronze, an alloy of copper and a small amount of tin that is solid throughout; some pieces are sterling silver or brass. Its beaded pieces are designed in Dallas and handcrafted in Thailand. The description of each piece names its metal, its stones and any treatment the maker states.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Golden bronze: avoid water while wearing it, and keep it in an airtight bag or a jewelry box. Barse applies a protective coating, and over time the bronze may develop a rich patina. To bring back its shine, use a jewelry polishing cloth, or mild detergent with water and a brush. Sterling silver: store it dry and apart from other pieces, and polish it with a cloth made for silver. Genuine stones: keep them away from perfume, lotion and harsh cleaners, and store each piece on its own.
